ICON golf cart repair in Georgetown: what these carts actually need

ICON carts have arrived in numbers in Georgetown over the last several years, particularly in Sun City Texas and the newer neighbourhoods, because they offer street-style equipment and a lot of standard features at a competitive price. They are newer than the Club Cars and E-Z-GOs they park next to, which changes the shape of the work we do on them.

What we actually see on these carts

Charging system faults. On any newer cart, the highest-frequency call is charging: a charger that will not start, a charge port that has developed resistance and heat, or, on lithium models, a battery management system that has put the pack into protection. All three look identical to the owner, and all three are far cheaper than a pack. This is the diagnosis that matters most on a modern cart.

Controllers and electronics. These carts carry more electronics than a 1990s DS, which is mostly an advantage: fault information is available rather than guessed at. When a controller does fail, it is $300–$600.

Brakes and tires, on schedule. Nothing brand-specific, and universally neglected. Electric carts slow mostly through regenerative braking, so the mechanical brakes glaze and the cables corrode rather than wearing in. A $75 adjustment caught early beats a $400 overhaul. Tires here age out of the sun before they wear out.

Accessories and wiring. Street-style carts come with lights, signals, horns, mirrors, and often a sound system, all of which are wired into the pack. Those circuits are also where parasitic draws hide, and a parasitic draw is one of the ways a cart that sat for a few weeks ends up flat.

Parts, honestly

The aftermarket for Club Car and E-Z-GO is vast, and for the newer brands it is thinner and more distributor-dependent. In practice that means some ICON parts have to be ordered rather than pulled off the truck. We tell you that when we quote, and the return trip to install an ordered part does not carry a second trip charge. Where a quality universal part fits properly, we will say so, and where only the correct part will do, we will say that too.

If yours is lithium

A lithium pack changes maintenance to almost nothing and changes diagnosis meaningfully. There is no watering, no electrolyte to evaporate in a Georgetown summer, no sag on a climb, and seven to ten years of expected life. What there is instead is a battery management system whose job is to protect the pack, and which will disconnect it if it sees a condition it does not like: too hot, too cold, over-discharged, or a cell out of balance.

From the driver’s seat that looks like a dead cart. It is not necessarily a dead pack, and checking it properly before replacing anything is the whole point of bringing out a technician instead of a parts-swapper.

Warranty

A cart still inside its factory warranty belongs with the selling dealer for covered work, and we will say so rather than taking the job. Where we are useful on a newer cart is everything warranty does not cover: tires, brakes, accessories, damage, batteries past their term, and diagnosis when the dealer is weeks out and you want to know what you are dealing with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on ICON carts?

Yes. They are common in Sun City Texas and across Georgetown's newer neighbourhoods, and mechanically they are conventional enough that the work is familiar: packs, chargers, controllers, brakes, and tires.

Are parts hard to get for an ICON?

Sometimes slower than for Club Car or E-Z-GO, because the aftermarket for the older brands is enormous and the newer brands run through distributor networks. We tell you honestly when a part has to be ordered, and you do not pay a second trip charge for the return visit to install it.

My ICON came with lithium. What is different?

No watering, no pack-voltage sag on hills, seven to ten years of expected life, and a battery management system that can shut the pack down to protect itself. That last part matters for diagnosis: a lithium cart that has gone dead may have a BMS protection event rather than a failed pack, and that is worth checking before anything is replaced.

What does an ICON repair cost?

The same published rates as any cart: $50–$100 service call applied to the repair, solenoids $100–$250, controllers $300–$600, chargers $300–$800, brakes $75–$400, tires $75–$150 each, and lead-acid packs $1,200–$1,800.
